Ladies Group was established after the First World War as a Catholic Church Charity Organization of Urmia. This charity was lead by priests and a group of women volunteers with Mar Eshagh’s supervision, the Archdiocese of Urmia and Salamas, on 1923-1925. The group leader was Miss Hery and the title was later passed on to Miss Sandra Yahyabaik, who took leadership responsibility.
This charity organization is renamed to “St Mary the Mother of Mercy” with supervision of Mar Thomas Meram and is currently lead by Miss Roza Bet Mirza.
The main activities of the group are helping needy and elderly people, charity campaign, and tailoring Priest, Deacons and choir group uniforms as well as other related textile decorations within the Church.
Palo Ceremony on March 15th of 2009
The Palo is celebrated in the middle of every forty-day fasting season by St Mary the Mother of Mercy at the hall of Catholic Church of Urmia.
This year, the celebration had a large turnout, all members and other parishioners attended.
Miss Roza Bet Mirza, in the opening ceremony speech, requested Mar Thomas Meram’s prayer and His blessings. Mar Thomas’ speech emphasized on the meaning and the importance of fasting in the Catholic beliefs. He reiterated,
fasting is not just a diet, it has a great and meaningful inner spiritual purpose, it involves charity work, helping needy and elderly people, repenting and attending prayer sessions.
