Memphis Officer Joseph McKinney

Joseph McKinney (age 26, 1997 – April 12, 2024) was a Memphis Police Officer. He died during a shooting shooting incident in southwest Memphis. The shooting happened around 2 a.m. on Hewlett Road and Horn Lake Road while officers were checking a report about a suspicious vehicle.

The Memphis Police Department (MPD) said that as the officers approached the vehicle, they were shot at. In response, they fired back. This led to injuries for two officers and two people in the car, according to MPD.

The vehicle drove away but was found later on Hewlett Road. MPD immediately arrested one suspect, while another ran away but was found nearby. Both suspects were taken to Regional One Hospital.

After the incident, three Memphis police officers were taken to the hospital, but it wasn’t clear how badly they were hurt. Sadly, Officer McKinney died at the hospital.
