His hockey journey began during his school years at Minsk’s renowned hockey school, Yunost. He started playing in the Belarusian 1st division for Junactva Minsk in 1998.

Koltsov’s impressive speed and control over his movements quickly gained attention after his debut in the 1997-1998 season. Fans nicknamed him the “Russian Rocket II” due to his playing style, reminiscent of Pavel Bure.
