All About Laphonza Butler

Laphonza Butler (age 44, born in May 1979) has made history as the first openly LGBTQ person to represent California in the Senate. She’s also gained recognition as the inaugural Black woman to lead the American Political Action Committee (PAC).

Having played a crucial role as an advisor and strategist during Kamala Harris’s 2020 presidential campaign, Butler’s political acumen and dedication are well-known.

On October 1, 2023, a significant milestone was achieved when Butler assumed the position of U.S. Senator from California, filling the void left by the late Dianne Feinstein. This move not only highlighted Butler’s capabilities but also honored Governor Gavin Newsom’s commitment to appoint a Black woman if Feinstein’s seat became available.

It’s worth mentioning that Governor Newsom faced considerable pressure from various Black advocacy groups. Some advocated passionately for Congresswoman Barbara Lee to be chosen for the seat. Despite the challenges, Butler emerged victorious, marking a new chapter in California’s political landscape

Laphonza recognizes herself as a lesbian. The proud member of the LGBTQ is also married, and her wife is Neneki Lee. Unlike Laphonza, Neneki stays away from social media as she does not like the camera’s attention.

The couple also has a little daughter named Nylah. If you open Butler’s Twitter handle, you will find many of Laphonza’s photos with her daughter and partner, although her Instagram account barely has any of such images.

Laphonza Butler Family Background

In May 1979, Laphonza Butler (age 44) was born in Mississippi, United States. Raised in Laphonza by her parents, she attended South Pike High School. Tragically, at 16 in 1995, Butler faced the loss of her father, a profoundly impactful event for the young girl.

Her mother, a resilient woman, shouldered the responsibility of raising her daughter as a single parent, taking on various jobs to sustain their livelihood. Laphonza’s mother, juggling roles as a teaching assistant, gas station cashier, and security guard, displayed remarkable determination to provide for their family.

In 1997, Laphonza completed her high school education and enrolled at Jackson State University. This historically Black college became the nurturing ground for her passion for Political Science, culminating in the attainment of her bachelor’s degree in 2001.

Laphonza Butler’s Political Career

Following her college graduation, Butler embarked on her career as a union organizer, dedicating her efforts to various causes. She began in Baltimore and Milwaukee, advocating for nurses, then moved on to represent the rights of janitors in Philadelphia and hospital workers in New Haven, Connecticut.

In 2009, her journey led her to California, where she was responsible for organizing in-home caregivers and nurses. During this period, she also served as the president of SEIU United Long Term Care Workers, SEIU Local 2015.

Her impactful work led to her election as the California SEIU State Council president in 2013, where she tirelessly worked towards advancing California’s minimum wage and advocating for increased income taxes on the state’s most affluent residents. In 2018, Governor Jerry Brown appointed Butler to a 12-year term as the University of California regent.

While fulfilling this role, she continued to leave her mark on the political landscape. However, in 2021, she decided to step down from her position as regent. In 2018, Butler took on a new role as a partner at SCRB Strategies. At SCRB, she shaped Kamala Harris’s 2020 presidential campaign.

In 2020, Butler made a transition to Airbnb, where she assumed the role of director of public policy and campaigns in North America. Her commitment to making a difference in the political landscape remained unwavering. In 2021, she achieved another milestone in her career, being named the third president of EMILY’s List.

This distinction was significant as she became the first Black woman and mother to lead the organization. Fast forward to October 1, 2023, when Governor Gavin Newsom selected Butler to fill the position of U.S. Senator from California.

This appointment came on the heels of the sad passing of Dianne Feinstein on September 29, 2023. It marked the fulfillment of Governor Newsom’s commitment to appoint a Black woman to this esteemed office.
