Paul-Henri Nargeolet (age 77) was born on March 2, 1946, in Haute-Savoie, Chamonix, France. At the age of three, Nargeolet, accompanied by his parents, relocated to Africa, where he spent 13 years of his childhood. In 1962, he returned to France after living in South Africa.

Nargeolet’s passion for diving led him to join the French Navy in 1964. During his 22-year tenure, he gained extensive experience as a mine-clearing diver, deep-sea diver, and submarine pilot.

His remarkable skills and expertise eventually led him to work for IFREMER, a publicly funded French maritime research institute. His first dive on the Titanic was in July 1987, about two years after the wreck was discovered.

After serving 22 years in the Navy, Paul joined IFREMER as Director of DESM in 1986. During his time at IFREMER, Nargeolet headed the operations recovering over 1000 objects from the wreckage site of Titanic.

Some recovered items included passengers’ personal belongings like shoes, binoculars, etc. IFREMER not only collect items from the sunken ship but also created a detailed map of the wreckage site. In December 2003, Nargeolet left IFREMER and began working as a consultant.
