Shaylee Mejia (2007 – May 15, 2024) was a 16-year-old student at Manual Arts High School. She tragically lost her life due to bullying. The incident occurred in the school bathroom, where Shaylee was violently attacked by bullies. The entire incident was recorded and shared online, showing Shaylee being assaulted while others watched.
As a result of the attack, Shaylee suffered serious internal brain injuries, although she was unaware of their severity initially. A few days later, she was hospitalized due to severe headaches. Unfortunately, Shaylee passed away on March 15.
The circumstances of her death prompted investigations, with Shaylee’s family blaming the school management for not addressing the bullying issue despite previous complaints. A GoFundMe campaign was launched to support Shaylee’s family with funeral expenses during this difficult time.
Shaylee faced bullying many times
On March 5, 2024, Shaylee Mejia was involved in a confrontation with bullies at her school in the girls’ restroom. This wasn’t the first time she had faced bullying from these students, as they had been targeting her since July 2023.
Shaylee often returned home with bruises from previous altercations with these bullies. Despite the ongoing harassment, she didn’t mention anything about the March 5 incident to her mother. However, unbeknownst to her, the entire fight was recorded by another student and later circulated on the internet.
The day after the fight, Shaylee complained to her mother about a severe headache but still continued attending school.
Shelly died six days after the fight
On March 9, Shaylee was hanging out with her friends when she suddenly collapsed. She was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors discovered that she had suffered multiple brain injuries.
The doctors also revealed to Shaylee’s family that her collapse was due to a severe hemorrhage. Despite the medical care she received, Shaylee remained unconscious for six days until her passing on March 15.
Her grieving mother, Maria Juarez, is now seeking justice for her daughter, who was tragically taken too soon due to bullying. Maria holds the school officials responsible for failing to protect Shaylee from the ongoing harassment.
