All About Former Oklahoma Judge Traci Soderstrom

Traci Soderstrom (age 50, born in April 1973) is a former judge from Oklahoma. In February 2024, she resigned from her position after being accused of sending over 500 text messages criticizing prosecutors and jurors during a murder trial.

A video showing her using her phone extensively during the trial was shared by local news outlets. Following an investigation, a settlement agreement was reached with the Judiciary of the State of Oklahoma.

According to the settlement, Soderstrom was accused of violating the Oklahoma Constitution. Both parties agreed to resolve the matter without a trial. Soderstrom voluntarily resigned as District Judge for the 23rd Judicial District of Oklahoma by February 9, 2024.

As part of the agreement, Soderstrom agreed not to seek any future judicial positions in Oklahoma. She also waived her right to appeal, and in return, the state agreed to dismiss the action against her.

In a statement released by her attorney to CNN, Traci acknowledged her commitment to fairness in legal proceedings but admitted to making mistakes due to being human.

Sent Over 500 Texts During Court Hearing

Traci Soderstrom, a former District Judge, is currently facing allegations of using her phone excessively during a significant court hearing. The case involved Khristian Tyler Martzall, who was accused of the tragic 2018 death of his girlfriend’s 2-year-old son, Braxton Danker.

During the trial, surveillance footage captured Soderstrom using her phone under the judge’s bench for about 50 minutes. It appeared she was texting or browsing social media, occasionally taking notes with her phone still visible on her lap.

Interestingly, Soderstrom had previously told the jury to avoid using electronic devices to focus on the trial. However, the footage showed her not following her own advice, which raised concerns about fairness.

In one moment, a witness named Judith Danker became emotional and reached for a tissue. Despite this, Soderstrom briefly glanced at her before returning her attention to her phone, likely responding to a text.

Traci Soderstrom's career

Soderstrom Resigned Amid Investigation

After an incident, the Oklahoma Council on Judicial Complaints started looking into the actions of former District Judge Traci Soderstrom. This inquiry began when they got a video from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, showing Soderstrom’s controversial behavior during a trial.

The Oklahoma Supreme Court found that Soderstrom sent over 500 text messages to her bailiff during the trial. These texts talked about the trial itself, with both Soderstrom and the bailiff saying negative things about witnesses, calling them liars.

The court said this behavior showed a severe neglect of duty, unfair favoritism, and abuse, and it also showed Soderstrom didn’t have the right attitude for a judge. Just three days before her trial in a special court, Soderstrom resigned, admitting she acted inappropriately.

After she left her position, Soderstrom said in a statement that she resigned because she was worried she wouldn’t get a fair trial.
