Caroline Fohlin (age 57, born December 1966) is a professor of economics at Emory University since 2017. Before her current role at Emory, she spent over four years as a Distinguished Visiting Professor there.

Her career has been extensive, including a position as a Research Professor of Economics at The Johns Hopkins University since 2004, and prior teaching at the California Institute of Technology from 1994 to 2004.

Fohlin’s research has been published in several prestigious journals, covering topics such as finance, economic history, and business. Notably, she authored “Finance Capitalism and Germany’s Rise to Industrial Power” (Cambridge University Press, 2007), shedding light on the relationship between finance and industrial development.

Additionally, Fohlin serves as a research associate at the Center for Japan-US Business and Economic Studies at New York University’s Stern School of Business.

Her scholarly achievements have been recognized with honors such as delivering the Bundesbank Lectures in Banking and Finance at the University of Freiburg in 2007 and receiving the DAAD Prize for Distinguished Scholarship in German and European Studies in 2005.

On April 25, 2024, Caroline Fohlin was detained during a police crackdown on people supporting Palestine at the university in Decatur, Georgia. The incident occurred amid student encampments and protests, a scene reminiscent of similar events unfolding at universities across the United States.

A video of what happened went viral. It showed Fohlin getting grabbed by a police officer, knocking her down. Her glasses fell off, and she hit her head on the ground.

At the same time, Noelle McAfee, head of the philosophy department at Emory, was also detained by Atlanta police. CNN was there and filmed women, including Fohlin, talking to the police. Fohlin said she was worried about how police were treating students.

Caroline Fohlin’s Life Before Joining Emory University

Caroline Fohlin was born in December 1966 to her mother Barbara Fohlin and her father Hal Fohlin in North Reading, Massachusetts, and grew up with her two sisters Sylvia Fohlin, Marybeth Fohlin Smith, and brother Howard Fohlin.

After finishing high school in 1984, she went to Tufts University. There, she studied Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Quantitative Economics and graduated in 1988. Later, she continued her education at the University of California, Berkeley, where she earned a Ph.D. in Economics in 1994.

After getting her Ph.D., Fohlin started working as a professor at the California Institute of Technology in 1994. She taught there for ten years before moving to Johns Hopkins University in 2004.

At Johns Hopkins, Caroline became a Research Professor of Economics and stayed there for 11 years. During her time at Johns Hopkins, she did a lot of important research in economics.
