David Hanbury (aged 37 ,1987 – March 17, 2024) was an ssociate professor and co-chair of the Psychology Department at Averett University in Virginia.
Tragically, Hanbury’s life came to an untimely end when he was found deceased on March 17, 2024, three days after disappearing while attending the Southeastern Psychological Association Conference in Orlando, Florida.
The University shared the heartbreaking update on Facebook, expressing their concern and sadness over Hanbury’s disappearance. They mentioned that a missing person’s report was filed with the Orlando Police Department, detailing Hanbury’s last known appearance at the conference wearing a blue short-sleeve polo shirt with a small University of Kentucky logo on the front left side.
The Averett University community mourns the loss of Dr. David Hanbury, remembering him fondly for his contributions as a beloved faculty member and co-chair of the Psychology Department. His sudden absence has left a void in the hearts of many, and he will be dearly missed.
David’s Career at Averett University
David Hanbury joined Averett University in 2015 as an associate professor and co-chair of the Psychology Department. He also took on the role of chair for the Division of Physical and Psychological Health Sciences.
During his time at Averett, Hanbury taught introductory psychology courses and specialized in biological psychology concentration classes. In 2022, he earned tenure and was promoted to Associate Professor of Psychology.
The following year, David became the department co-chair and chair of the Physical and Psychological Health Sciences division. His dedication and contributions were recognized when he received the Outstanding Faculty Member of the Year award for the 2022-2023 academic year.

Hanbury pursued his education at the University of Southern Mississippi, where he earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees in experimental psychology with a focus on comparative psychology.
During his time at the University of Southern Mississippi, He conducted research on the behavioral and hormonal effects of stress, personality traits, and hemispheric specialization in Garnett’s bushbaby, a small nocturnal primate native to Africa. David passion for teaching also blossomed during this period while instructing undergraduate courses.
After earning his doctorate in August 2011, Hanbury relocated to Winston-Salem, North Carolina, for a four-year postdoctoral research fellowship in comparative medicine at Wake Forest School of Medicine.
During this fellowship, he studied brain pathology and cognitive functioning in rhesus macaques, further solidifying his expertise in primate behavior, comparative psychology, and animal behavior.
