George and Lori Schappell (aged 62, September 18, 1961 – April 7, 2024) were the oldest conjoined twins and the oldest female ones ever. They were connected at the head, sharing some of their brains and important blood vessels.

Even though they were joined, they were quite different. Lori was strong and could do many things, while George had a condition called spina bifida that made walking difficult. He used a special chair that Lori would push for him.

George was a country singer, and Lori was great at bowling and won many awards. In the 1990s, Lori also worked at a hospital laundry. She made sure to work around George’s music shows, which took them to places like Germany and Japan.

In 2007, George, who was born as one of the twin girls in West Reading, made a significant change by coming out as a man. This made him and Lori the world’s first conjoined twins to identify as different genders.

George, who used to be called Dori, had felt deep down since childhood that he was meant to be a boy. He loved playing with trains and didn’t like wearing girly clothes at all. But for a long time, he kept this secret hidden, even from Lori.

He finally opened up about his true self and began living as the man he knew he was. He changed his name from Dori to George and started dressing and introducing himself as a man, even though he didn’t have surgery to change his body.

Lori was surprised at first when Dori became George, but she was proud of him. She said that they had faced many challenges together and had always been a strong team, no matter what. Their bond stayed unbreakable, showing that nothing could get in the way of their support for each other.

Lori was once engaged to be married

Lori Schappell was once engaged and looking forward to marrying her fiancé. However, tragedy struck when he passed away in a car accident caused by a drunk driver, just four months before their wedding.

She credits George for being a pillar of strength during those challenging times. She said, “George took care of me. Without his support, I’m not sure how I would have coped with the heartbreak.”

George was a country singer

George Schappell was known for his talent as a country singer. He traveled across the United States, as well as to Germany and Japan, showcasing his music. In 1997, he received recognition for his work when he won an L.A. Music Award for Best New Country Artist.

One of his memorable performances was singing “Fear of Being Alone” for the credits of the comedy film “Stuck on You,” which was about fictional conjoined twins. George’s music added a special touch to the movie’s storyline.
